No jargon, no vendor mystique \u2014 just what it is, why it matters, and the numbers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h1 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What a azure landing zone actually is<\/h1>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Think of Azure like a plot of land you&#8217;ve just bought. You <em>could<\/em> start building straight away \u2014 but without foundations, drainage, and a connection to the road, everything you build will be fighting the ground it sits on.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A landing zone is those foundations for your cloud. Concretely, it&#8217;s the set of things that should exist <strong>before<\/strong> the first workload arrives:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Identity<\/strong> \u2014 who can log in, with what permissions, enforced with MFA and conditional access<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Network layout<\/strong> \u2014 how systems talk to each other and the outside world, usually a hub-and-spoke design<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Guardrails<\/strong> \u2014 policies that stop expensive or dangerous mistakes: wrong regions, untagged resources, public storage<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Cost controls<\/strong> \u2014 budgets, alerts and tagging so the finance team is never surprised<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Logging and security baseline<\/strong> \u2014 so when something odd happens, there&#8217;s evidence<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Microsoft formalises this in its Cloud Adoption Framework, and the pattern we build to is called an <em>enterprise-scale landing zone<\/em>. But the principle fits a 20-person firm just as well as a 2,000-person one \u2014 only the size changes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Why &#8220;we&#8217;ll sort it later&#8221; costs more<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Most messy Azure estates we audit started without foundations. Someone span up a subscription for one project, then another, then a test environment became production, and three years later nobody can say what&#8217;s running, what it costs, or whether it&#8217;s secure. Untangling that after the fact costs far more than doing it right at the start \u2014 because by then, live systems depend on the mess.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There&#8217;s a second, quieter cost: an estate without guardrails fails security questionnaires. If an insurer, auditor or enterprise customer asks &#8220;how do you control access to production?&#8221;, &#8220;it&#8217;s complicated&#8221; is not a winning answer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What it should cost<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Honest numbers, because almost nobody publishes them:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>The build<\/strong> \u2014 a properly scoped landing zone, delivered as code, is a fixed-price project. For most small and mid-sized organisations, expect a <strong>two-to-four-week engagement<\/strong>. Beware of quotes that are either suspiciously cheap (a portal click-through you can&#8217;t rebuild) or open-ended day rates (a meter with no end).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>The running cost<\/strong> \u2014 the landing zone itself is mostly free. Policies, management groups and identity cost nothing; you pay for what runs inside it. Budget a modest amount for logging and monitoring.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>The saving<\/strong> \u2014 this is the part people miss. Guardrails and visibility typically claw back 20\u201340% of cloud waste, which usually pays for the build within months.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">One more thing worth insisting on: the landing zone should be <strong>code in your repository<\/strong> \u2014 Bicep or Terraform \u2014 not clicks in a portal. Code can be reviewed, rebuilt and audited. Clicks can&#8217;t.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Questions to ask any provider<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Will the landing zone be delivered as code, in <em>our<\/em> source control?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Is it aligned to Microsoft&#8217;s Cloud Adoption Framework?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>What happens if we part ways \u2014 can our team run it?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>What&#8217;s the fixed price, and what exactly does it include?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If any of those get a vague answer, keep shopping.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>We build Azure landing zones as fixed-price sprints \u2014 everything as code, documented, and yours.
